As we reach the end of 2013, the Trust has been looking back over the past year, including the stats for this web-site; in particular, the stats from the 27th December 2012 to today (27th December 2013). The list below shows the top ten, most viewed items on our web-site. The home page is, of course, by far and away the most viewed part of the web-site (Home page / Archives), followed, we are pleased to see, by Contact us and Who we are. Then, in descending order:
The Colchester Archaeologist
Media archive
Colchester’s Roman circus site and centre opened to visitors
Survivor of the 1884 earthquake
Colchester Archaeological Reports
extraordinary ‘bustum’ burial excavated in Colchester
How to find us
The Trust is also pleased to see that the report on the opening of our circus centre to visitors (on the 24th August) was one of the most viewed items on the web-site this year, as was ‘How to find us’… ‘The Colchester Archaeologist’ item is about the annual popular magazine which the Trust publishes about our work. The ‘Colchester Archaeological Reports’ item is about the twelve monograph volumes which the Trust published about the archaeology of Colchester, as investigated between 1971 and 1985, when Colchester was the site of some of the largest excavations in Britain; these led to significant discoveries which added considerably to our understanding of the origins and development of town life in Britain. Eleven of these volumes are available to read in our online archive, and all twelve volumes are available to purchase from the Trust.
‘Media archive’ is a large collection of links to media items published online about the work of the Trust, the Roman circus and the archaeology of Colchester, which gives some indication of the level of public interest and local support. The ‘extraordinary bustum burial excavated in Colchester’ is about the remarkable pyre burial which the Trust excavated in February 2013 at the Butt Road car-park site, not far from Roman Circus House and the site of the Roman circus.
The circus centre is currently closed but will re-open to visitors on the 2nd January 2014; it is open every weekday, 10.30am-4.30pm. Entry is free. The cafe is now closed for the winter.
We would like to thank all our web-site visitors for their interest and support in 2013, and we look forward to seeing everyone at the circus centre in 2014!
