#ThrowbackThursday Heybridge Hall

This week, for #ThrowbackThursday we are discussing the Iron Age, Roman, medieval and post-medieval remains at Heybridge Hall, Heybridge, Maldon.

Back in 2007, we conducted an archaeological evaluation at Heybridge Hall, a 13th-century building which had burnt down in 2004. A previous evaluation in 1991 had identified an area of medieval activity to the east of the hall site, so we knew we were sure to find something interesting here 👀

In our ten trench evaluation, we identified a medieval ditch to the east of the site of the 13th-century hall, but no structural evidence such as post-holes or slots. Within this, sherds of medieval pottery were recovered which suggest that this ditch was dug at the same time as the foundations of the medieval hall complex in the 12th-13th century🏡

I wonder what it was used for?🧐
