#FindsFriday – Small Finds

Happy #FindsFriday everyone! Today we wanted to try something a bit different and discuss a find type rather than a specific find

If we’re on site and come across a find that’s more ‘special’ than normal, it is kept and recorded separately from the rest of the ‘bulk’ finds like pottery, animal bone or building material. These are called ‘small finds’, although they’re not always small!

Small finds can include a wide range of material, including coins, brooches, figurines or even stones like quern stones and whetstones!

If you’d like to learn more about small finds then check out CAR 2: The Roman small finds from excavations in Colchester 1971-9 and CAR 5: The post-Roman small finds from excavations in Colchester 1971-85. Or if you’re interested in coins then have a look at CAR 4: The coins from excavations in Colchester 1971-9. All can be found at: http://cat.essex.ac.uk/all-reports.html
