This #ThrowbackThursday we will look at our excavation at Colchester High School!
Following on from an evaluation in November-December 2005, in 2006 we visited CHS to conduct as excavation prior to an extension of the school![]()
CHS is situated in an area of Roman cemeteries. To the west we have Essex County Hospital (ECH) which revealed many burials when it was constructed in the 1820s. In our most recent excavations at ECH (2020-2022) we have identified even more burials, evidencing this as an area important for the Roman’s burying their dead![]()
A large amount of inter-cutting pits and ditches were recorded at CHS in 2005-6, suggesting that the site was an open area used for rubbish-disposal in the Roman period. Although no definite burials were identified, one feature could possibly be an inhumation burial and there were pots found in later deposits that may well have been from earlier burials![]()
