Today (15th February), the plasterer Bob Sparkes was working in the large ground-floor corridor and the staff kitchen at Roman Circus House. The large corridor was the service corridor of the NAAFI, the main artery of the building and the zone between the utility rooms and the public rooms. It has two large skylight ‘lanterns’. The three archways for the bar, counter and serving hatch to the public rooms were in the service corridor, plus two doors to the public rooms, and access to the kitchen, the beer store, the manageress’s office, the scullery and the other utility rooms. The manageress’s office is now the staff kitchen, but it is being converted to the kitchen for our new cafe. The NAAFI was purpose-built in 1937 and it was very well-designed. Bob will be finishing this stage of the plastering tomorrow.
We are hoping to open our NAAFI cafe to the public at Easter!
Many thanks to Bob for letting us record all his work and take so many photos. of him working.
The images show the work in progress today at Roman Circus House.
