Yesterday (15th February), a group of pupils from the St John’s Green Primary School visited our current site on the former garrison. This was a special one-off visit, because it is the site of the new buildings which will form a separate part of St John’s Green Primary School.
The site has produced Roman inhumation and cremation burials, including the extraordinary bustum or pyre burial which we posted on this web-site last week. There is also a large medieval pit here which is thought to have been a quarry-pit for the underlying sands and gravels. We are also finding oyster shells – the class which visited is the ‘Oyster class’, and so we supervised their excavation of some oyster shells which they then took back to school.
St John’s Green Primary School is just round the corner from Roman Circus House.
