3rd – Friends of Colchester Museums lecture: ‘COLCHESTER AT WAR – Life on the Home Front’, by local historian Patrick Denney, at 7.30pm at Lion Walk Church. See www.the-friends-of-colchester-museums.com/?page=lecture
14th – the Colne barge match, starting from Bateman’s Tower, Brightlingsea. The match consists of two races for traditional sailing boats, one for Colne smacks and one for Thames sailing barges, starting this year at 8.30am and returning in the afternoon. 12th-15th – Heritage Open Days: heritage buildings, institutions and sites which are participating in the HOD scheme are open to visitors, free of charge, for four days (12th-15th September). 17th – Friends of Colchester Museums lecture: ‘LOOKING FOR RICHARD III: an update on the project’, by historian John Ashdown-Hill, at 7.30pm at Lion Walk Church.
18th – Friends of the Colchester Archaeological Trust (FCAT) outing to Maldon in Essex, 9.00am-about 6.00pm. The outing will include a guided tour of the historic Moot Hall, ending up on the roof, and a 3-hour cruise on the barge Victoria, from Paper Mill Lock and along the Chelmer Navigation as far as the 12th-century Ulting Church, and returning to Paper Mill Lock.
