Remembering Barbara Butler

We were very sad to hear of the passing, over Christmas, of Barbara Butler, a much-loved supporter of Colchester Archaeological Trust and the Roman Circus Visitor Centre.

Barbara was a dedicated member of the Friends of Colchester Archaeological Trust and supported our work with great enthusiasm over many years. She also took part as a volunteer in the excavation of part of the Roman Circus, a contribution that forms part of the site’s story today.

More widely, Barbara was an active member of the Colchester Archaeological Group and the Colchester Tourist Guides Association, reflecting her deep interest in Colchester’s past and her commitment to sharing it with others.

She will be especially remembered at CAT for her leadership of the Colchester branch of the Young Archaeologists’ Club, which continues to hold monthly meetings at the Roman Circus Visitor Centre. Through this role, Barbara inspired curiosity, confidence, and a lasting love of archaeology in many young people.

Her deep knowledge, cheerful smile, and warm encouragement will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and the many young archaeologists whose lives Barbara enriched.
