This #FindsFriday we are looking at something a little different (although you may recognise them!).👈🏻
These are musket balls, which could possibly be from the Civil War period (although they were used later than this, until the introduction of the bullet). Sometimes we are so overwhelmed with Colchester’s amazing Roman significance that we forget it’s importance in other periods.🙋🏽
During the Civil War, Colchester was a supporter of the Parliamentarian cause, but found itself at the centre of dispute in 1648 as, after losing a battle against the Parliamentary army, the Royalist army retreated behind Colchester’s walls! This resulted the Siege of Colchester which lasted for 11 weeks, and saw the Parliamentarians surround the town and stop supplies from entering, before the Royalists finally surrendered.
It’s amazing that something as small as a musket ball, can remind us of such an important part of Colchester’s history.🙌
