Yesterday (2nd August), the Trust’s site volunteers held a birthday ‘do’ for site volunteer Sam Currie at Roman Circus House. Site volunteer Pip’s mother made a brilliant birthday cake in the shape of the dig! Trust director Philip Crummy thought the cake looked almost as good as the real thing. The cake is a representation of the site; it includes two excavators excavating and a good selection of site tools, as well as stones, finds, features and the defunct modern service pipe right down the middle of the site. Apparently archaeological cake is one of the best things about excavating an archaeological site, even when it’s the only Roman circus in Britain…
The Trust is very grateful to our site volunteers for all their hard work on our important site, and we don’t begrudge them the cake at all…
Great work by our site volunteers. Happy birthday, Sam!

(Also note the highly appropriate cup cakes.)
