Yesterday we undertook our fifth summer

, and managed to wash a grand total of 91 trays of finds ![]()
Our favourite find was the base of a Samian platter that had been repaired using a ‘hold and clamp’ technique. Two holes would have been drilled on either side of the crack in the platter. A strip of lead would have been placed in the holes when it was still hot. This would have contracted as it cooled to form a seal, so that the item could be re-used!
This was clearly an important plate, with so much effort used to save it!![]()
