On the 10th October, at the Trust’s thank-you party for all our dedicated volunteers, we were talking to long-serving volunteer Don Goodman about his father Sergeant Goodman, of the Royal Artillery. Sergeant Goodman was stationed in the Artillery Barracks, Colchester in 1937. Roman Circus House, the Trust’s new premises, was formerly the NAAFI of the Artillery Barracks and it was built in 1937. Sergeant Goodman would have used the Sergeants’ Mess rather than the NAAFI, but Don has a fantastic photo. of Sergeant Goodman on parade with his battery on the barracks parade ground in 1937 – the parade ground site is adjacent to Roman Circus House. It was recently used as the Butt Road public car-park and is currently the site of an excavation by the Trust.
This is an amazing family connection between the Trust and the Artillery Barracks through our volunteer Don. Don also used to work as an excavator with the Trust and is now very active in the CAG (Colchester Archaeological Group).
Don very kindly agreed to provide the Trust with details about Sergeant Goodman and to let us copy some of his family photo.s and to use the material in Roman Circus House. So watch this space!
The photo. shows Don and Howard Brooks of the Trust lurking in a corner at the thank-you party.
