#ThrowbackThursday St Mary’s Primary School

This #ThrowbackThursday we will be looking at the work we did at St Mary’s Primary School, Kelvedon.

Our work at St Mary’s was carried out between August 2016 to July 2017. The excavation was located in Kelvedon, a village in the south eastern corner of Braintree District, at the point where the Roman road between Colchester and Chelmsford crosses the River Blackwater. The Roman road broadly follows the line of the High Street🚗

The most significant feature on this site was a Roman roundhouse, a large building which was approximately 10m in diameter. The roundhouse consisted of nineteen post-holes with an external drip-gully.

Next to the roundhouse there was also a deep well. Post-holes close to this probably represent fence-lines or a fenced-enclosure.

Overtime, the population declined as the Romans left, and the roundhouse fell into disrepair. Dating evidence from the roundhouse would suggest that it fell out of use sometime in the mid to late 2nd century AD. In addition to the Roman finds there were some medieval and post-medieval features that belonged to the inhabitants of the village after the Romans left👀
