Throwing it way back to the excavations at Lion Walk this #ThrowbackThursday ![]()
The Lion Walk excavation took place from 1971 to 1974, before the construction of the Lion Walk shopping precinct. It yielded some very interesting building remains which were identified as the remains of the Roman Legionary Fortress ![]()
The Legionary Fortress was founded at Camulodunum after the Claudian conquest in AD 43, covered 49 acres of land, and housed the 20th Legion of the Imperial Roman army.
We have only excavated a small percentage of the Fortress, with excavations at Lion Walk, Culver Street and the Gilberd School in the 1970s and 1980s and Mercury Theatre in 2018 giving a glimpse into what the barracks would have been.
It’s amazing to think that all this was just under where our shops are now! ![]()
