this floor is made for walking

Yesterday (14th June), the Trust’s new floor – for the whole of the public space on the ground floor of Roman Circus House – was completed when the final tiles were laid. The work began on the 11th. We can now reveal the colour of the circus interpretation centre! We have chosen a modern terracotta (possibly samian ware) colour which, if you look very closely, incorporates tiny flecks of orange and yellow… We wanted a colour which is modern but also invokes Roman culture. (Our ‘circus’ sign on the front of Roman Circus House is red, white, green and blue, but it was designed to represent the colours of the four teams which competed in Roman chariot races.) An interesting and unexpected side effect of the new floor is the rose pink ambience which the space now has, because of all the light which pours in through the windows and is reflected up off the tiles. The floor is a big step forward in the creation of the interpretation centre.

We are delighted with the new floor and we look forward to seeing our visitors walking all over it!

The image shows part of the new floor yesterday, in all its glory.
