The Trust launched our ‘flash fund-raising’ campaign to help us bid for a grant to enhance the Roman circus centre and site on Friday (4th December). Colchester’s Daily Gazette published an item about our flash fund-raising on that evening, titled ‘Colchester Archaeological Trust in race against time to raise funds for Roman circus chariot’, and also posted it on their web-site, at www.gazette-news.co.uk/news/14122546.Public_appeal_to_help_Roman_circus/ . An item was published in the Essex County Standard on Friday, as well: this was titled ‘Our Roman circus needs your help’.
We have launched our flash fund-raising to try and raise £5,000, this week, so that we can apply for a grant of £50,000 from the Cory Environmental Trust. If we are successful and receive this grant, we will use the money to enhance the site of the Roman circus in the garden in front of the Roman circus centre. We plan to commission a life-size sculpture of a Roman racing-chariot with four horses and charioteer to stand on this part of the site of the arena. The scheme also includes the addition of the outline of several spectators from the circus audience to our profile of the circus seating-stand, and to link the profile with the chariot and horses by having it decorated in the same way.
