On Saturday (14th May), ‘the Daves’ very kindly performed a set on stage here at the Roman circus centre for the Trust’s volunteers and some of their own friends and family. The Trust provided afternoon tea and we all enjoyed a lovely sunny afternoon with live music and cakes made by Ralph and Kate of the circus centre cafe. ‘The Daves’ are two friends – David Patience and David Maclean – who get together to play their guitars and sing popular songs: David Maclean is the husband of Trust archaeology volunteer Christine. ‘The Daves’ played a variety of songs, ranging from The Beatles, through Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers, to Elvis, and gave us a very enjoyable show.
Many thanks to ‘the Daves’, to Christine for all her help, and to Kate and Rory in the cafe for all the tea and coffee. Thank you to everyone for coming: the Trust is, as always, extremely grateful to all our volunteers for their contribution to the Trust and to archaeology, and to the Roman circus centre. We hope that our circus centre visitors and cafe customers also enjoyed the music!
The images show the Daves in concert on Saturday in the cafe at the Roman circus centre. (When the building was a NAAFI, this room was the men’s restaurant: we think that the stage would have been equipped with a NAAFI piano and that musical service personnel would have been able to play it to entertain servicemen enjoying their free time in the restaurant.)
