Today (26th April), Trust volunteers Peter Herring and Owen Hay worked on the first of the earth banks which marks the site of some of the seating stands of the Roman circus. They raked over the bank and seeded it with wildflowers and grasses which will be red, white, blue and green to represent the colours of the four Roman racing teams which competed at circuses. On Wednesday, Owen and Peter, with Ray Allan, had re-shaped the bank in preparation for today’s work. The bank is in the former paddock of the Cavalry Barracks and visible from Circular Road North, and, as it is on public-access land, can be visited at any time.
Trust volunteers have already done a great deal of invaluable voluntary work for the Roman circus. Peter initiated and managed the making of the ‘Roman circus’ mosaic by local school pupils and other volunteers, which we hope to display in the circus interpretation centre.
The images show Peter and Owen working on the circus bank today, near Circular Road North.
