The Trust is delighted to announce that we can now present two new live attractions in the Roman circus centre – our friendly volunteers Wendy and Leslie, who will be at the circus centre to interact with visitors from this week onwards. Wendy will wash and mark pottery in the ‘archaeology in action’ room, from 12.00pm till 4.30pm, Tuesday-Friday, and she will be very pleased to talk about what she is doing with interested visitors. Leslie will also wash and mark pottery, on Fridays, 11.00am till 4.00pm, and she will be available to give free guided tours of the Roman circus centre and site, on request.
Our team of volunteers are currently working their way through the processing of large quantities of archaeological material from our recent and current sites, including Brightlingsea. Today, Wendy washed and then marked several joining fragments – now reassembled – of a Middle-Late Iron Age, grog-tempered pottery vessel, with a small lug handle, which probably represent a drinking-vessel like a tankard. So you never know what you might come and find Wendy and Leslie processing at the circus centre!
We invite you to come to the circus centre, chat to Wendy and Leslie and see archaeological material being processed live, and enjoy a free guided tour.
With many thanks, as always, to all our dedicated volunteers for all their hard work and great contribution to the Trust and to the Roman circus centre.
The images show: Wendy working on a decorated Early Iron Age pottery bowl (which is about 2,700 years old) in the ‘archaeology in action’ room and ready to talk to visitors this week and, today, Wendy holding the Middle-Late Iron Age drinking-vessel and the same vessel in close-up. (The bowl and the drinking-vessel are both from our Brightlingsea site.)
