The weekend is over and we’re back with another #MeetTheStaffMonday. Today we’re going to be meeting Project Manager and Post-Medieval pottery specialist Howard!
“Hi, I’m Howard! I first came to Colchester to dig as a schoolboy volunteer on Ros Dunnett’s 1970 excavation on Sheepen Hill. Of the 53 years since then, I’ve clocked up about 35 years with CAT (and its predecessors), and have been involved in most of the large town-centre digs in some capacity or other 🏠
I am a graduate archaeologist (Cardiff). I’m also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, Honorary Secretary of the Essex Society for Archaeology & History, and a Community Fellow at Essex University.
Though in theory retired, I am still to be seen in the office helping to prepare reports on our legacy sites. 🕛
It is hard to think of a favourite site or find. Perhaps the cupid mosaic floor from the Middleborough dig, which I directed (the mosaic is in Colchester Museum, and the site is now the Octagon)👀
Outside archaeology I am a baritone (occasionally semi-pro) singer, and turn out for a number of different groups. I am also a fanatical National Trail walker, and my first pic shows me completing the Cleveland Way in Yorkshire. My wife Katrina and I have two grownup daughters, and a bonny granddaughter Charlotte👣”
