This #MeetTheStaffMonday we are meeting our Fieldwork Manager Adam!🎉
“I first worked at the Trust in 2004 on the Colchester Garrison excavation where the remains of Britain’s only known Roman circus were uncovered. After completing a Masters degree and travelling around the USA I returned to the Trust in late 2006 and have been here working in my home town ever since. The highlights of my time here at CAT have been directing the town centre excavations at the old Williams & Griffin store, Jacks, Mercury Theatre, and the former Essex County Hospital site 👀
My area of particular interest in archaeology is the British Lower Palaeolithic, and as the Trust’s worked flint specialist I get to record all the amazing lithic artefacts that are collected during our excavations (although very few actually date to as far back the Palaeolithic!😔).
As CAT’s Fieldwork Manager I get to work with our talented fieldwork team to piece together the evidence we uncover to tell the story of a site or a particular event. We are very lucky here in Colchester to have a wealth of exciting archaeological remains buried below our city and it is a privilege to be able to tell the residents of Colchester (and beyond) about all the fantastic things we have discovered. My favourite find has to be the Fenwick Treasure, not because it contained gold and silver objects, but because the stories that those objects tell are so closely linked to the development of Colchester and the lives of some of its earliest inhabitants.
In my spare time I am a season ticket holder at Colchester United (for my sins)⚽️ and I enjoy travelling, watching live music, drinking beer and taking part in sports such as football, basketball and even a spot of fishing! I have two wonderful kids (Lily and Alex) and I am married to Anna who is the Head of School at Silver End Academy👨👩👧👦”
