inaugural meeting of Essex Industrial Archaeology Group: 23rd November

The Essex Industrial Archaeology Group (EIAG, a sub-group of the Essex Society for Archaeology and History or ESAH), has been launched and will be holding its inaugural meeting on Saturday 23rd November 2013. The ESAH posted their announcement of the meeting on their blog on the 26th September, with a reminder posted on the 14th November and, yesterday (19th November), a reference to the meeting in a blog post about something else…

‘Industrial archaeology’ is the study of equipment, buildings and structures, engineering  schemes like canals, and sites and landscapes associated with historic industry. The Association for Industrial Archaeology say ‘… Britain was the first industrial nation. For the last two centuries industry has had a major influence on the society, environment and landscape in which we live …’. Essex has had a surprisingly wide range of historic industries, including engineering, weaving, manufacturing, pottery kilns, maltings and brewing, brick-making, ironworks, commercial fishing, boat-building, etc.

The meeting will run 2.30-4.30 pm at Chelmsford Museum, Oaklands Park, Moulsham Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM2 9AQ, on the 23rd November. There will be a short business meeting, which is open to all, followed by a number of short talks introducing the industries of Essex. If you arrive early, you can have a look round the museum before the meeting.

ESAH say: ‘… All interested in Essex’s industrial past, its archaeology and heritage and in the activities of the Group are welcome …’

If you would like to attend the meeting, then please contact Tony Crosby at tcrosby.iah@outlook.com or on (01279) 656632 to book your place.
