hands-on prehistoric flints for the YAC and members of the public

On Saturday (18th May), the Colchester Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC) met in the large upstairs room at Roman Circus House for a hands-on session with prehistoric flints led by Trust archaeologist Adam Wightman. About 20 children took part, with about 20 adults who included parents, YAC organisers, and members of the public who had joined in the recent fieldwalking sessions at Wormingford with the YAC.

Adam presented an introduction to the identification of flints and then talked about the use of flint tools during prehistory. The group thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on session of identifying flints and filling in the tables of data. Everyone was very keen and there were lots of questions! They also had a look at the flint axehead which was found by a member of the public during one of the sessions of fieldwalking – led by Trust archaeologist Howard Brooks – at Wormingford. This is a well-made, polished flint axehead, made during the Neolithic period, which would have been attached to a wooden handle; it is a very rare find in this area.
