Friends of Trust AGM and annual lecture 2014: Saturday 8th February

The FCAT (Friends of the Trust) AGM and annual lecture 2014 will be held on Saturday 8th February. The AGM will be at Roman Circus House, off Circular Road North, Colchester, Essex, at 11.00 am.

The annual lecture – actually a programme of short illustrated talks – will be held at 2.00 pm on the same day at the Lion Walk United Reformed Church, Lion Walk, Colchester, Essex. The short talks will be presented by Trust archaeologists, reviewing our work of the past year, so it is your chance to catch up with recent archaeological discoveries in Colchester and Essex. The talks will be: Trust director Philip Crummy discussing Colchester’s remarkable Roman circus; Ben Holloway on our fieldwork at Brightlingsea quarry and Colchester garrison Area E (the St John’s Green Primary School annexe); and Adam Wightman on our excavation at Shoebury and fieldwork at the Colchester Officers’ Club (the site of St John’s abbey). At Brightlingsea quarry, we uncovered evidence of two Anglo-Saxon huts and an agricultural landscape. By the sea at Shoebury, on the site of Shoebury garrison, we recorded part of an Iron Age domestic enclosure.

The talks will be followed by tea. Copies of the latest issue of the Trust’s annual magazine The Colchester Archaeologist (no 26, 2013) will be available to buy. There is no need to book for this event. Entrance is free for members of FCAT and costs £2 per person for non-members.

All welcome! We look forward to seeing you.
