For this #FindsFriday a grey Roman face pot!🏺
Roman face pots would have been made in Britain from the invasion (AD 43) all the way up until the end of the 3rd century AD.
This one which is in coarse grey ware fabric is likely to be have been made in Colchester and may have been used as a storage jar or as a funerary urn. There are some possible traces of sooting on the nose and on the interior.
What makes face pots like this one and others interesting is that they’re all unique. Varying from basic faces to very complex ones. Each pot would have been hand sculpted by a potter with no mould used! 😮
