For this #FindsFriday we would like to highlight an amazing exhibition celebrating the culmination of a two-year project at St. John’s Primary School. This exhibition organised by One Square Mile: Heritage on our Doorstep launched last night at The Minories in Colchester.
📅 Opening Date: 12th September
🕙 Time: 10am – 4pm
🗺 Location: The Minories, Colchester
🖼 Run: Thursday 12th September – Sunday 6th October 2024
This unique exhibition offers displays of pupils’ artwork, a 3D cardboard model of Colchester, a timeline of the school’s history, #OralHistory recordings, and resources developed by pupils and teachers.
We were lucky enough to get a #BehindTheScenes peek at the exhibition set-up while we dropped off some archaeological artefacts which will feature in this #exhibition.
One of the objects is a bead rim jar with diagonal #burnished lines (see drawing from CAR10 below). This vessel, found in a grave may represent a container for provisions for the deceased, but given its size could be a drinking vessel. The image below shows the abraded grey surface while the vessel was still in-situ.
A plain globular beaker with a small, everted rim was also recovered from this grave and is also featuring as part of the One Square Mile exhibition. And for those avid followers out there, remember #FindsFriday from February 2023 when we discussed Roman lamps from this site? One of these is also on display at this exhibition – look out for the outspread wings of an eagle!
