This #FindsFriday we are discussing coins!
We found all of these from one of our Colchester sites last year. Coins are incredibly useful as they can give us clear and specific dates for sites. For example, if we have a coin dated to AD100 we know that the feature it has come from (like a pit or grave) is no earlier than AD100🧠
These particular coins were found through metal detecting. This is an incredibly helpful technique for archaeologists to use alongside excavation. Metal detectors can be used to scan a site pre-excavation, or the spoil heap (our excavated soil) for any metal objects such as coins, brooches and nails🧐
