Is it a bird, is it a plane? ✈
This is a copper-alloy cockerel figurine 🐔 from the Roman period. Measuring 45mm in length, this small item came from a possible large quarry feature at one of our sites in Colchester. On closer inspection, you can even see it’s carefully constructed comb, wattle and sickle feathers, evidencing the skill of the Roman metalworkers.
Cockerels held a special significance with the Romans, and we see other examples of this type of figurines elsewhere in the country. Small but mighty; this tiny bird would certainly impress Mercury, the god which cockerels are most associated with! 🐓
