excavating a cremation urn indoors

Our team of dedicated volunteers are at work every day at Roman Circus House, either on the renovation of the building or processing archaeological material which we have excavated.

Today we did some archive recording, using both photo. and video, of the excavation of the contents of a Roman cremation urn from a recent site.

The images show our volunteer Catherine in the pot room at Roman Circus House today, carefully excavating the contents of the cremation urn, layer by layer. The contents so far include soil, small stones  and, visible in the last image, fragments of cremated human bone and an emerging fragment of pottery.
