Upcoming Event at the Roman Circus Visitor Centre: The Future of Our Roman Circus and Historic Garrison

Roman Circus Visitor Centre, Colchester

The Roman Circus Visitor Centre will host a special public drop-in event hosted by New Town and Christ Church ward councillors, titled “The Future of Our Roman Circus and Historic Garrison.”

This event is an opportunity for the people of Colchester to learn more about two key historic sites—the Roman circus and the former Royal Artillery (Le Cateau) and Cavalry barracks—and to share thoughts on their future.

 

What’s Happening:

Displays: Maps, aerial photographs, and image boards exploring the history of the circus and the historic barracks

Design Concepts: Visual ideas and plans for the area’s future

Guided Tours: Directors of the Colchester Archaeological Trust will lead tours of the Roman Circus site every half hour, highlighting:

• The displays at the Roman Circus Centre
• The reconstructed remains of the starting gates
• The full line of the circus
• How the circus has been gradually developed as a heritage and educational site since its discovery in 2004

Please note:
The Centre will be open to the public only during the event (11am–1pm) and will be closed for the rest of the day. However, you can find us at the Roman and Medieval Festival in Castle Park (link here) all weekend—come and say hello there!

We’ll also be open the following Saturday, June 14th, as part of our summer season opening hours.

Parking at the Visitor Centre is limited, but the Butt Road and Napier Road car parks are both located close by.
