Colchester’s Roman circus site and interpretation centre opening tomorrow!

Everyone at the Trust is pretty excited, as tomorrow is the opening day of Colchester’s Roman circus site and our circus interpretation centre. We (Trust staff and all our dedicated volunteers) have been very busy over the past year, renovating Roman Circus House, working to enhance the site of the circus, and preparing the cafe and interpretation centre.

We still have a lot to do but, if you come to visit us now, you will be able to see our work in progress. Outside you will be able to view the bases for the partial reconstructions of the starting-gates, the earth bank which defines part of the site of the circus, and our current excavation of the foundations of part of the circus seating-stand. Indoors you will be able to sample the delights of our new cafe and look at the material which is on display. We will be adding a lot more material to the display as the year progresses, and we are also hoping to build an extension containing a classroom/lecture room.

This is the site of the only known Roman circus in Britain, and this is the only circus interpretation centre in Britain!

We look forward to seeing you! – on repeated visits…
