On Saturday (18th June), the Colchester Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC) held their June meeting at Colchester Castle Museum.
Colchester YAC organiser Barbara Butler writes: ‘… The Young Archaeologists met in Colchester Castle Museum on Saturday to present artefacts which they had selected from the museum stores to visitors to the museum. The Young Archaeologists had previously enjoyed two training sessions with Colchester Museum Services in handling and understanding the artefacts. Visitors were impressed with their knowledge. The Young Archaeologists were based near the museum reception desk, and Castle Museum staff members remarked that even they were learning from the Young Archaeologists! The event was so popular with the Young Archaeologists that they were keen to do it again.
The Young Archaeologists also started their Lego model-building project, in which they aim to reconstruct models of historic buildings from excavated remains which will be represented by red bricks. They also used square bricks to make a mosaic. The Young Archaeologists also made a ‘shopping-list’ of the bricks which they will need for the whole project, the models of which will form part of their Roman fun day at the Roman circus centre on Saturday 16th July …’.
The fun day will start at 11.00am and finish at 4.00pm: admission is free. Further details on this web-site at www.thecolchesterarchaeologist.co.uk/?event=colchester-young-archaeologists-club-archaeological-fun-day .
