‘boxes, little boxes’

Today (5th April), the archives and documentation officer Steve Yates of Colchester and Ipswich Museums came to Roman Circus House and took over 60 finds boxes and crates (5 cubic metres of material) away, for permanent storage in the museum store. The material was all from fieldwork projects undertaken by the Trust which were funded by Colchester Borough Council over the past ten years, and it included fragments of painted Roman wall-plaster from the Sixth Form College, some of which may be put on public display. The other material included animal bone, glass, pottery, ceramic building materials, small finds and medieval leather shoes. The museum actually took the complete archive for every project, including the paper archive of site notes, plans and printed report. The material was mostly from sites in the town centre like firstsite, St Botolph’s priory, around the castle, Vineyard Street and the Sixth Form College.

The images show some of the finds boxes ready to go, Trust archaeologist Ben Holloway helping to load the van, and the van fully loaded.
