Yesterday (4th April), Gary Rowe of CrispAerial brought his mini helicopter to Roman Circus House to take some sample aerial photo.s of the north-west end of the site of the Roman circus with Trust director Philip.
Gary has set up his company CrispAerial to produce aerial photo.s using the mini helicopter. This can fly up to a height of 400 feet and Gary has a licence, insurances and various permissions and he has to work to required procedures. The helicopter is not a toy – it is, in effect, a regular but very small aircraft limited to flying at a maximum height (400 feet). Yesterday Gary undertook his test flight here to demonstrate the potential of his equipment and then sent us three versions of one of his shots to look at. We are very pleased with the results and we plan to ask him back to repeat the exercise in a few weeks’ time, when we have finished building the new stumps of the circus starting-gates and the garden of the former Sergeants’ Mess has been tidied up for visitors. We will use the photo.s in our display at the circus centre.
The images show the fantastic mini helicopter on the ground, Gary flying the mini helicopter in the garden of Roman Circus House, and his aerial view of Roman Circus House and the former Sergeants’ Mess next door, showing the north-west end of the site of the circus, including the new stumps of the starting-gates, the new earth bank which defines part of the seating-stand, and the site of our recent excavation on part of the remains of the circus in front of Roman Circus House.
