#ThrowbackThursday St Andrew’s Road, Weeley

Today we will look at our excavation at St Andrew’s Road, Weeley for #ThrowbackThursday.

In advance of the construction of 14 new buildings, we conducted an excavation in 2017. Previously, the 2016 evaluation had revealed a number of Roman features together with silt-filled hollows, which made further investigations necessary👀

The excavation revealed a variety of activity including a Late Iron Age/Early Roman small semicircular enclosure surrounded by irregular field boundaries and pits. It is thought that in the Roman period (2nd-3rd century), this was replaced with a rectilinear field system🟩

After this, it seems that activity on the site ceased until the late 13th to 14th centuries when a large-metalled ground-hollow was constructed on the eastern edge of the excavation area which would have provided watering holes for livestock, suggesting the presence of a previously unknown medieval farm🐮🐷🐔
