CAT Report 2191: summary

by report prepared by Tabitha Lawrence with contributions by Laura Pooley, Alec Wade and Dr Matthew Loughton

Summary

Archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out at Hall Street Methodist Church, Hall Street,
Chelmsford, Essex in advance of the conversion of the church building into five dwellings. Monitoring
revealed probable Roman post-packing material, a post-medieval brick wall and a post-medieval pit.
Finds included pottery, ceramic building material, animal bone and a hairpin. The features of postmedieval
date are likely associated with the church itself. Roman finds attest to the Roman activity
within the vicinity.
