Archaeological monitoring and recording at 27 High Street, Stock, Essex CM4 9BD: September-October 2025

CAT Report 2224: summary

by Xander Smith with contributions by Dr Matthew Loughton, Laura Pooley and Alec Wade

Summary

Archaeological monitoring was carried out at 27 High Street, Stock, Essex, ahead of works to
subdivide the building and plot to form two separate dwellings along with associated building work.
Located in the garden of a Grade II listed building dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, the
development site lies within the core of the historic medieval village that was also a centre of pottery
manufacture from the 16th to 19th centuries. Groundworks uncovered post-medieval remains dating to
the mid-18th to 19th century. Features including a metalled surface, brick wall foundations, a brick well
and pits represent outbuildings and activity to the rear of the listed building. One of the pits produced
pottery wasters and kiln furniture as well as brick and peg-tile wasters which must have come from
one of the nearby kiln sites.
