Today (10th January), a group of women volunteers from the Colchester Recalled Oral History Group met in the large public room at Roman Circus House, with local historian Andrew Phillips.
However, this isn’t even the most exciting thing that happened today at Roman Circus House! Yesterday (9th January), the timber roof-trusses for the Trust’s new storage building were delivered. Today, joiners Chris and Johnny erected the roof-trusses on top of the building. This is, actually, very exciting for us, as we hope to have the building completed in February, so that we can move all our equipment, finds and stores into it. Then we will clear the store room in Roman Circus House and our team of dedicated renovation volunteers will renovate it. The store room was originally the large kitchen of the barracks NAAFI of the Artillery (Le Cateau) Barracks, which was formerly housed in Roman Circus House. When the room has been renovated, it will be opened to our visitors as an additional space in the circus centre. This will become our ‘Archaeology in action’ room, where visitors can see how archaeologists undertake excavation and also watch and chat to our archaeology volunteers while they process pottery.
