#FindsFriday More painted wall plaster!

Following on from a previous #FindsFriday we’re going to be discussing the painted wall plaster found at the 2005 excavations at the Sixth Form College in Colchester. In one context alone a staggering 2,645 fragments of painted plaster were found varying from 2-11.2cm and derived from decorations of the main panel areas of a wall or multiple walls 🤩

Some of the plaster had painted architectural and mythological elements including snakes. Wall plaster that was painted to look like marble was also found – which was a very rare find for Colchester! It was noted that the quality was “unprecedented” for the excavations in the town 🐍

A bath house discovered on the site was lined with a purple painted bench with lower murals and a shrine which was painted a pink-red colour.

For more information on the painted wall plaster as well as the rest of the site check out CAT Report 347 at: http://cat.essex.ac.uk/all-reports.html
