Young Archaeologists’ Club looks to the future

On the 23rd March, the Colchester Young Archaeologists’ Club met at Roman Circus House.

Club organiser Barbara Butler writes:

‘… We had a brilliant meeting with 14 members, three of whom joined on the day. We now have 24 members of the Colchester branch of the Young Archaeologists’ Club.

In spite of heavy snow, 14 members made it to Roman Circus House. After some necessary “warm up” games, the children used cold tea to “age” paper, to make “treasure” maps of all the cultural venues in Colchester (including Roman Circus House). Because the weather was so cold and damp, these took a long time to dry and the children were challenged to think of contemporary items to put in a “time capsule” in Colchester Castle, to be buried. The time capsule might be buried in the oubliette. Still waiting for their “aged” maps to dry, the young archaeologists had blank postcards and lots of flyers and brochures of the cultural venues in Colchester to make collages with and decorate. These too, are for hiding away for the future. By the time we finished, they were still completing their maps and personal details. This project, run by Amy Cotterill, is on-going.

We are planning to meet at Wormingford school on the 20th April to take part in a Neolithic and Bronze Age fieldwalking project. This will be followed up with finds washing and identification back in Roman Circus House on the 18th May …’
