CAT Report 2225: summary
by Xander Smith
Summary
A programme of historic building recording was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust on a
structure known as The Cowshed at Shelley Hall, Shelley Road, Shelley, Suffolk in November 2025.
The recorded structure is a brick built agricultural outbuilding of Shelley Hall (NHLE 1351981), which
cartographic evidence indicates was constructed prior to 1838. The earliest elements of Shelley Hall
were constructed in the early 16th century, with many additions in the 17th and 19th centuries. The
main construction of the cowshed is of red brick laid in English-bond with multiple instances of repair
across all elevations. The building was likely originally a stable block and presently has a dual function
as a domestic space separate from a set of stable stores.
