CAT Report 2152: summary

by Harvey Furniss with contributions by Dr Matthew Loughton, Laura Pooley and Alec Wade

Summary

An archaeological excavation was carried out at Marvells, 5 High Street, Stock, Essex, ahead of the
construction of an extension and outbuilding. Previous investigations have uncovered significant
archaeological remains close to and within the development site. Notably, these include the remains of
a post-medieval brick kiln immediately east of the site.

Post-medieval activity revealed by the current
excavation included a metalled surface, a tile and brick filled ditch as well as four other ditches, two
pits and a hollowed trackway. The finds assemblage was dominated by post-medieval brick and pegtile
which identify the features as part of possible kiln activity.
