Archaeological evaluation by trial-trenching on land at Plextek Ltd, London Road, Great Chesterford, Essex, CB10 1NY: September 2025

CAT Report 2207: summary

by Tabitha Lawrence

Summary

Archaeological evaluation (a T-shaped trial-trench) was carried out at Plextek Ltd, London Road,
Essex in advance of the construction of a single-storey extension with basement. Located outside the
significant Roman settlement of Great Chesterford, previous work at the development site has
revealed Roman and medieval activity. Archaeological evaluation revealed a pit, a possible linear and
an unidentified cut all dating from the 19th to 21st century. Despite being located close to the Roman
and medieval settlements, there were no archaeological remains within the evaluation trenches.
Evaluation did reveal a modern dump layer overlying truncated natural ground across the whole site. It
is unclear whether this truncation took place before or during the construction of the Plextek complex.
It was not possible to determine if any archaeological remains had been impacted by this truncation.
