CAT Report 2243: summary
by Laura Pooley with contributions from Dr Matthew Loughton
Summary
An archaeological evaluation (twenty trial-trenches) was carried out at land south of Holland Road (the
Old Chicken Farm), Little Clacton, Essex, in advance of the construction of a new housing estate.
Located in an area where significant prehistoric and medieval archaeological remains have previously
been identified, the current evaluation revealed twenty-two features (two ditches, fourteen pits, five
post-holes and a stakehole) in eight of the twenty trenches. Dating evidence was recovered from
eleven features and revealed evidence for both prehistoric and medieval activity on the development
site. Sixty-three sherds of prehistoric pottery were recovered from five pits and a stakehole in trenches
T14, T17 and T19, which included sherds dated to the Late Bronze Age from one pit. Medieval pottery
was recovered from a ditch and four post-holes in trenches T4 and T7, indicating a date range from
the 11th to the 12th/early 13th century.
