The Cologne Connection: How Legio XX Shaped Colchester’s Temple of Claudius

April 16 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Temple of Claudius, Colchester talk

Scholars usually explain Colchester’s Temple of Claudius by comparing it with other early imperial cult sanctuaries in the western provinces. In this talk, Dr Julia Tomas offers an alternative view and uses Rome’s Temple of Mars Ultor and the Temple of Mars at Cologne as the key points of reference.

Dr Tomas draws on ancient written sources, Roman coin imagery, and architectural comparison to show how Cologne’s Temple of Mars – shaped by close links with the Julio-Claudian imperial family – may have provided the most direct model for Colchester’s Claudian monument. She also explores how people involved in major building projects may have carried architectural knowledge across the empire through movement, training, and lived experience.

Dr Tomas illustrates the talk throughout and ends with a Q&A.

Speaker:

  • Dr Julia Tomas, Associate Lecturer in Classical Studies, The Open University
  • Research interests: history, epigraphy, and public architecture in the Roman Empire
  • Publications include work on Julio-Claudian Asia Minor and Constantinian Rome
