Archaeological evaluation at land adjacent to 55 Church Road, Elmstead, Essex: November 2025
CAT Report 2223: summary
by Laura Pooley with contributions from Dr Matthew Loughton
Summary
An archaeological evaluation (seven trial-trenches) was carried out on land adjacent to 55 Church
Road, Elmstead, Essex, in advance of the construction of six bungalows and associated infrastructure.
The site lies in an area of extensive cropmarks, close to a postulated Roman road and medieval moat.
The evaluation revealed twelve features (three pits, two post-holes, two gullies and five ditches) which
were concentrated in Trenches 3 and 5. Pottery from five of the features has been dated from the late
Saxon through to the medieval period (10th to the 13th centuries) and it is highly likely that all the
features on the site are of a similar date.
